Hello valued reader,

This month we take a look at: a weight loss elixir we all need, the dangers of a well known diet pill, fresh mangoes, a smart foods cooking demo to drop your cholesterol, how you can win a copy of The Breakfast Book, plus more!

What’s in the News – Diet Pill Taken off the Shelves

Doctors across Australia and New Zealand have been ordered to stop prescribing Reductil (sibutramine), Australia’s biggest selling diet pill, after a major study linked its use with unwelcome side effects of stroke and heart attack. Dr Steve Hambleton, federal vice-president of the Australian Medical Association stated “the risks well outweigh the benefits of this drug and I’m glad we have removed the weight loss drug from our shelves”.

Reductil works to influence the brain into thinking you feel full, thereby reducing your food intake.

What is the evidence? The preliminary results of the SCOUT (Sibutramine Cardiovascular OUTcomes) study with 10,000 patients confirmed that taking sibutramine for weight loss significantly raised the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Interestingly, Reductil already came with some precautionary advice: to avoid its use in patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, tachycardia, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, arrhythmia or stroke. So the latest findings are simply the last nail in the coffin!

Our advice: If you’re still taking Reductil, please see your doctor immediately. But don’t despair - we can help you enhance your eating habits so you can lose weight without nasty side effects. The only side effects you will experience will be more energy, confidence and a reduced risk of chronic disease!

Slimming Tip – A Proven Weight Loss Elixir

Could water really be a secret to keeping weight off? We know it’s important for good health and hydration levels but a recent study suggests water can also assist with weight loss. In a randomized controlled trial (considered the ‘gold standard’ in scientific studies) an increased consumption of water was shown to suppress appetite. The best part is that water requires no prescription, has many health advantages and costs almost nothing!

By drinking just two glasses of water (i.e. 500ml) before each meal, people consumed 20-25 % less calories at their meals. Over a 12 week period this led to an almost 2.5 kg greater weight loss compared to dieters who did not increase their water intake.

Why not try it for yourself? But don’t go overboard. Although rare, it is possible to drink too much and develop water intoxication. This can occur at levels more than 5-10 times the recommended intake.

What’s Fresh – Mango

Did you know that mangoes are the most popular fruit in the world? Australians alone eat their way through eight million trays each year! Interestingly, mangoes are from the same botanical family as cashews. Originating more than 5,000 years ago, there are now over 1000 mango varieties across the world. India is home to this tropical fruit producing 50 % of the world’s crop – but you won’t find any Indian mangoes in Australia due to our strict quarantine regulations. Almost half of our mango supply is sourced from North Queensland.

Mangoes exhibit a rich yellow skin, and the yellow-orange flesh is high in carotenoid antioxidants. They provide a good source of fibre, and a small ripe mango will supply you with up to three times your recommended daily intake of vitamin A (as beta-carotene) and vitamin C!

It is best to store mangoes at 12 degrees Celsius – think of the fruit bowl on your kitchen bench top. Mangoes don’t tend to handle well in cooler temperatures of the fridge. Mangoes make a great summer snack, can be tossed into salads and are easy to blend into a smoothie.

Clinic News – Need Inspiration to get Active?

One of our lifestyle dietitians, Monica Kubizniak, put herself to the Six Foot Track challenge and set out on a 3-day, 44 km, hiking adventure through the Blue Mountains over the October long weekend. Crossing mountain ranges and enjoying panoramic views, she clocked up over 70,000 steps! For those of us who regularly monitor our steps for good health and fitness, we know to aim for 10,000-13,000 steps each day. Well done Monica for surpassing this by far!

This activity was run through Australian Explorer, one of many adventure sports organisations where groups of people with similar interests can get together and keep active.

In the Kitchen – Mango Slicer

Want to help your kids eat more fruit? Try a mango slicer. Cutting mangoes can be messy but with this tool you can slice the mango cleanly in half, leaving almost no flesh on the seed.

By gently pressing down on the handles of the slicer, you can effortlessly slice a mango into two halves. The flesh can then be diced or sliced straight off the skin. Some mango slicers also feature a base, which holds the mango upright in place while you cut it, and collects the mess so you can enjoy it with hassle-free cleaning!

Mango slicers are an inexpensive addition to any kitchen. You can pick one up for around $10 from most kitchenware stores.
